Sequencing a home renovation so nothing gets redone
The most expensive renovation mistake is not choosing the wrong tile. It is painting before the plumbing is finished.

The order that avoids rework
Every stage below creates dust or moisture that damages the stage after it. Running them out of order means paying twice.
- Structural and civil work: wall changes, plaster repairs
- Plumbing and electrical, including all concealed lines
- Waterproofing for bathrooms, balconies and terrace
- Tiling and grouting
- Carpentry and false ceiling
- Wood finishes and spray work
- Painting, walls and ceilings
- Deep cleaning and handover
Realistic timelines
A full 2BHK renovation runs six to ten weeks when scheduled tightly with no material delays. Painting alone is four to six days of that; it feels like the main event only because it is the visible one.
Build in a buffer week. Marble, custom shutters and imported fittings are the usual culprits for slipped dates.
Where budgets actually go
For a mid-range Bangalore renovation, the rough split looks like this.
- Carpentry and modular work: 35–45 percent
- Civil, plumbing and electrical: 20–25 percent
- Tiling and flooring: 10–15 percent
- Painting and finishes: 8–12 percent
- Waterproofing: 3–6 percent
Do waterproofing before anything decorative
Waterproofing is a small fraction of the budget and protects everything spent after it. Skipping it to fund a better countertop is the trade that comes back two monsoons later as a stained ceiling and a repaint.
